a sarcastic and grotesque observation of society
We will always be a stranger to someone. Sometimes we are even strangers to ourselves – at least, when we don’t know who we are deep down, or what we and others are capable of.
Cafe Eurøpa takes great pleasure in poking fun at the vices and hypocrisy of mankind, creating: a sarcastic and grotesque portrait of society and giving audiences a new perspective on present day affairs. This is the shocking story of a small village and its inhabitants, but above all it’s the account of one place in particular, a cafe: Cafe Eurøpa. Cafe Eurøpa is surrounded by mountains, not too far from sea. From here, we can admire the jagged coastline and smell the sea air Up here you will find a road that takes visitors to an old cafe, in a strange hotel, at the heart of a village. The inhabitants of this village are preparing themselves to watch the 1.000 Miles Race (the most anticipated event of the year). But when a foreigner arrives, the atmosphere starts to change ...
Cafe Eurøpa presents us an allegory of modern society, a grotesque tale, an absorbing game of echoed truths that balances between reality and poetry, between the dreams and the cruelty of workaday life. It is an ironic glance that gives the audience a new perspective on contemporary life, taking enormous delight in mocking and mirroring man’s hypocrisy and vices – and always with an eye on the spectator that is both complicit and accusatory.
Formed in 2004, Ondadurto Teatro is a theatre company based in Rome and directed by founders Marco Paciotti and Lorenzo Pasquali. The company's artistic creations are defined by movement, acrobatics, dance-theatre, and sometimes a little text, combined with scenic machines, fireworks, water games, video and music. Ondadurto Teatro create touring shows and in situ events, working both indoors and out. They also produce and programme festivals (such as inEURoff in Rome), organise workshops and laboratories for children, and participate in EU projects.
